Europe lands in Québec!

Return to news list »

First, Josef Weiss, pioneers in aircraft and helicopter glazing, landed in Québec. Then came Corvus with its innovative and exciting acrobatic aircraft, The Racer. And now Dornier's legendary Seastar has touched down here.

Each of these European aerospace industry leaders is reaching new heights thanks to Québec's competitive advantages, including:

  • A productive and R&D-rich cluster;
  • An abundant, competent, stable and wage-competitive workforce;
  • Low costs and superior infrastructures;
  • Access to North American markets.

Dornier Seaplane Company announced on May 17, that a final assembly plant will be set up in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Québec. This $71.5 million project will lead to the creation of some 250 jobs in assembly of the Seastar, after-sales service and engineering.

Dornier holds the rights to the Seastar twin-engine plane developed by German company Claudius Dornier Seastar GmbH. The plane weighs less than 12,500 pounds, is made of composite materials and is powered by two turboprop engines manufactured by Pratt & Whitney Canada.

The Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu plant will be in charge of final assembly. Québec suppliers will be called on to provide composite structures, landing gear, interiors, windscreens, cabin windows, lighting and avionics. It will also carry out engineering work and design future versions of the Seastar.
